He's Always Late

288

Goku misses Bulma's barbecue party because he is busy protecting a nest of pterosaur eggs from predators in the wilderness. This lighthearted filler episode, the first of the Peaceful World Saga, captures life in a time of peace.

The Egg Guardian

Chi-Chi, Gohan, and Goten prepare to head to Capsule Corporation for a barbecue hosted by Bulma, but Goku has vanished. While his family grows increasingly frustrated, Goku is deep in the wilderness near Mount Paozu, sitting beside a nest of pterosaur eggs and waiting for them to hatch. His protective instincts kick in when predators threaten the fragile eggs, casting him into the role of unlikely guardian.

Goku battles snakes, enormous fish, and the general chaos of the wild to keep the eggs safe. He is completely absorbed in the task, oblivious to the social obligation he is missing. Chi-Chi eventually decides to attend the party without him, channeling her anger into determination to enjoy herself regardless.

A Party Without Its Heart

At Capsule Corporation, nearly every friend and family member of the Z Fighters gathers for the celebration. Dende, Mr. Satan, Good Buu, Tien, Chiaotzu, and dozens of others fill the rooms with laughter, food, and music. Chi-Chi even dances, earning playful comments from Bulma about her technique.

But the mood dips when someone mentions Goku. The room falls quiet as everyone realizes the party feels incomplete. Goku is the person who brings them all together, the common thread connecting this unlikely group of warriors, gods, and ordinary people. His absence leaves a noticeable void that no amount of food or music can fill.

Better Late Than Never

Back in the wilderness, Goku successfully protects the eggs through hatching. He watches with genuine wonder as the baby pterosaurs emerge and take their first breaths. Only then does he remember the party. He arrives at Capsule Corporation just as everything is being packed away, but Chi-Chi and Bulma refuse to let him miss out entirely. They unpack all the food and supplies, restarting the celebration on the spot.

The episode closes with everyone gathered around Goku as he tells the story of the pterosaur eggs with childlike excitement. Even Vegeta, who spent the party standing apart from the crowd, wanders close enough to listen. Episode 288 of Dragon Ball Z is a gentle reminder that peace, for these warriors, is the hardest thing they have ever earned.
