Gladius, an officer of the Donquixote Pirates, is the eater of this Paramecia power, which brands him a Puncture Human. The fruit lets him force his own flesh, or any nonliving material his hand meets, to inflate and then explode violently. Its title traces back to the Japanese onomatopoeia pum, also written pan pan, which mimics the sound of something bursting, and the VIZ and Funimation translations render it as the Pop-Pop Fruit in reference to how targets burst. The move names further pun on panku, which covers both a blowout, as in a tire puncture, and the punk genre, fitting his steampunk-flavored outfit.

The heart of the ability is inflation followed by rupture: anything inorganic he handles swells until it detonates, and he can apply the same effect to himself while walking away unharmed. Living tissue stays off limits, with one loophole, since a person converted into a toy by the Hobi Hobi no Mi counts as inorganic matter and can therefore be swollen and blown apart, which lets him kill such victims. Two limits govern the power. A swelling only bursts while Gladius stays conscious, so knock him out first and the bulge simply subsides. Releasing his grip likewise lets the target deflate on its own. Beyond those, he carries the usual fruit-eater vulnerabilities.

Gladius is the sole known wielder, and his named techniques span a wide toolkit. Met Punc bursts his helmet into a shrapnel spray, Jirai Punc seeds surfaces with hidden explosive trigger points like landmines, and Punc Bala floats inflated bullets that pop on contact and double as stepping stones for altitude. Punc Rock Fest and its upgraded Punc Rock Super Arena swell and blow up whole stretches of terrain, while Catapult Punc fires inflating rounds from arm-mounted launchers. Bracchium detonates his wrist devices, Punc Hair looses poison-coated needle strands, and Fashion Punc balloons his entire body into a bomb that scatters every needle when struck. Two other explosion-based fruits invite comparison. Mr. 5 carries the canon Bomu Bomu no Mi, and a filler villain wields the Basu Basu no Mi outside the canon. The key contrast is that Mr. 5 turns himself into a bomb, whereas Gladius instead forces himself or inorganic matter to swell and rupture. Within the spin-off titled One Piece in Love, a made-up variant of the fruit is invented by Nakatsugawa Usopp.
