Appearance

Towering and built around a steampunk aesthetic, Gladius wraps himself in a lengthy black coat decorated with gold rings along the arms and chest, studded rivets at the collar and shoulders, and gear-shaped plates at the elbows. Blue goggles, a studded white half-mask, a black top hat, and gold-zippered trousers round out the look, and a scar runs across his right temple toward one eye. His spiky pale blue hair is normally crammed under the hat, but it puffs out violently as his anger builds, sometimes bursting through the brim entirely or causing him to blow the headgear apart. After he swapped a ruined top hat for a sturdier motorcycle helmet, he later detonated that too to turn its fragments into weapons, and a Fashion Punc move once left him with a buzz cut. Childhood and youth portraits show him carrying a gladius sword and wearing progressively longer coats.

Personality

An explosively short fuse defines Gladius, and his rupturing powers tend to ignite right along with his temper. He pours total devotion into his "young master" Doflamingo, yet his loyalty came with an odd blind spot, since a Kin'emon disguise fooled him completely. Punctuality and exact obedience matter enormously to him, and he holds open contempt for anyone who fails to follow orders, even shooting Baby 5 in a casual, irritated way when her commotion bothered him. That callousness extends to his own troops, whom he wounded without a second thought during battle. He also has a weak stomach for grisly talk, nearly vomiting when Law described surviving beneath a heap of corpses.

Abilities

As a Donquixote officer Gladius commanded the crew's lower ranks plus a force of two thousand soldiers, and he held his ground against both Cavendish and Bartolomeo, each carrying a bounty north of one hundred million, before the latter put him down. He shrugged off a Gear 2 strike from Luffy without lasting harm and moved fast enough to snatch the famously quick Kabu, Rampo, and Thunder Soldier. His goggles sharpen his aim like a telescope, his arms house a firing mechanism for launching rupturing rounds, and his hair carries a paralyzing toxin that turns into deadly shrapnel when combined with his fruit.

Through the Pamu Pamu no Mi, a Paramecia fruit, he can inflate then burst his own body or any lifeless object he touches, producing blasts comparable to grenades. Swelling himself leaves him unhurt, but ruptured objects shatter into flying debris, and he can even erupt the ground itself. The power cannot affect living beings other than himself, though humans transformed into Toys by the Hobi Hobi no Mi count as objects and so become valid targets. Trained in gunnery, he taught Law how to handle firearms during their shared days in the crew. He fought through the Dressrosa siege, blowing up dwarves and toy soldiers, before Bartolomeo finally knocked him unconscious, and following Doflamingo's downfall the Marines arrested him with the rest of the officers.
