Gaston

A gentle, weathered face defines Gaston as much as anything about him. He wears his brown hair pulled back into a tidy ponytail, and his eyes share that same brown shade. Years in the field have left their mark on his features without draining the warmth from them.

Three years alongside Guts left Gaston devoted to him as both commander and friend, and he was rarely without an easy, upbeat cheer, taking special joy in the drinking that followed each victory. Though he once set aside earnings toward opening a clothing shop in Wyndham, he never resented his life among the mercenaries. When the band was driven into exile, he walked out on that dream to rejoin them, insisting the raiders were his real family. In a strikingly self-aware moment near the end, he confessed to Guts that he felt like a bit player in someone else's wild tale.

After the raiders bring down the Black Ram Iron Lance Knights, Gaston loudly celebrates Guts' feats despite the swordsman's modesty. During an assault on a Tudor stronghold he tries to hold Guts back from facing Nosferatu Zodd, warning that the danger far outmatches him; Guts threatens his life for even suggesting they fetch Griffith, yet Gaston is the first to help him up once the fight leaves him badly hurt. Later, when Guts plunges into a ravine to save Casca, Gaston carries word of it to Griffith and presses for a search party.

Following the victory at Doldrey he finally departed to chase his shopkeeping dream, only to return the moment he heard the band had been branded outlaws, telling Guts he simply could not stay away. He rode with Corkus' men to shield the wagon bearing a broken Griffith from Wyald's forces, and afterward asked to follow Guts, feeling home lay with his comrades rather than any storefront. During the Eclipse he was the final member Guts found still alive, only for an apostle to erupt from his skull and kill him at once. Haunted by having survived, Guts would later remember Gaston among the fallen.
