Void

Almost nothing human survives in Void's body. No hair covers his head, and his brain swells out openly from the top of his skull. His official figure reveals that little remains under the surface beyond a spinal column joined to two long arms, a shape stripped down so far that the Slug Count called him the archangel of his kind. As with the other angels, he possesses no true bodily presence until the astral and physical worlds merge and grant him solid form.

Void is the deepest thinker of the God Hand, his manner of speech formal and old-fashioned in a way that betrays his vast age and accumulated wisdom. Most of what he voices concerns the movements of causality. His temper stays muted, and he shows nothing on his face even when something none of his kinsmen foresaw comes to pass. He is likewise the most courteous of the group: where others might treat them as mere fodder, he receives the Band of the Falcon like honored guests.

Long ago, Void took form at a junction in time beside four monstrous entities wholly unlike the kinsmen he keeps now, a moment witnessed by a solitary figure wrapped in the Berserker Armor. His most fateful deed belongs to the Eclipse. The God Hand first show themselves to Griffith while he languishes in the Tower of Rebirth, hailing him as one of their own; later they draw him into an Interstice and pressure him to exchange his comrades for a seat among them. While Ubik dredges up memories of his past, Void bids Griffith surrender to fate and take raven-dark wings to climb above every peak. The instant Griffith consents, Void alone works the Invocation of Doom, sealing the doom of every Band of the Falcon member then present to unending torment. Once Griffith is remade into Femto, the Skull Knight strikes at Void, who parries by warping space through two joined portals before the knight flees with Guts and Casca.

Two years on, Void and his fellows appear before the dying Slug Count and press him to give up his daughter Theresia; he will not, and the Vortex of Souls swallows him. Within Albion, the demons take shape as half-formed things conjured from the city's frenzied spirits during the Incarnation Ceremony, and Guts finds that his sword passes through their bodiless forms. The rite brings Femto back in Griffith's shape and flings the surviving angels across the Astral World's tiers, until the Great Wave welds the physical and astral realms together and finally clothes them in flesh within Fantasia. Void afterward joins Slan, Conrad, and Ubik in calling on Griffith at Falconia, jeering at his realm as a mere dollhouse before withdrawing. His strength lies in his mastery over causality, which lets him trace fate's forking routes and steer events to the end he wants, though not even he sees all that will come.
