Blut leaves little outward trace in its offensive mode, but its defensive form betrays itself when tested. Struck skin reveals a faint blue tracery running along the veins under the surface, surfacing only on the exact spot that takes the blow.

The technique works by driving Reishi directly into the user's blood vessels, lifting their striking force and toughness far past human limits. Its defining weakness is structural: the attacking version and the defending version run on two distinct Reishi systems, so a Quincy can never engage both together. The offensive branch, Blut Arterie, supplies the raw power needed for a Quincy's ordinary attacks to wound a Bankai-wielding Shinigami, while the defensive branch, Blut Vene, can turn aside even Bankai strikes at full concentration, staunch heavy bleeding from existing wounds, and shield the eyes, though sufficient force can still tear through it. Yhwach carries his own Vene further into a surrounding barrier known as Blut Vene Anhaben.

Whether a Quincy gains Blut hinges on blood. Those of pure lineage develop it as a matter of course, while mixed-blood Quincy must earn it through training, which makes Ichigo Kurosaki notable for reaching it untrained despite his mixed heritage. Yhwach sets and adjusts the strength of Blut across the entire Wandenreich at will.
