Karin Kurosaki

Karin has dark grey eyes set in a face framed by straight black hair cropped just short of her shoulders. Away from her school clothes she gravitates to sportswear, cropped leggings or shorts with a casual shirt and trainers, and she is often seen with a red cap and a soccer ball tucked under one arm. Seventeen months on, she ties her lengthening hair into a short ponytail and takes to wearing a blue-and-white sailor uniform, and a full decade later she gathers her hair into a messy topknot and fills out a more grown figure.

Blunt and self-assured where Yuzu is soft-spoken, Karin carries herself as the more level-headed of the two. Losing their mother at five hardened her: unable to keep house the way her sister could, she vowed never to weep so as not to become a burden, and went years without shedding a tear. That resolve leaves her largely unmoved by things that would break Yuzu down, yet the sisters stay close, and she quietly steadies Yuzu whenever Ichigo's absences weigh on them. Practical and sarcastic, she will still boot her father squarely in the head whenever his antics get ridiculous, all while pitching in as a nurse at the family clinic. Though she can see spirits clearly, she long insisted that refusing to believe in them made them as good as nonexistent, even as she was happy to use the gift to earn a little pocket money.

Born alongside Yuzu when Ichigo was four, Karin lost her mother Masaki at five, a grief that set her stoic outlook. Early on she is drawn into her brother's spiritual life before she understands it: the soul of a boy trapped inside a parakeet floods her with painful memories, reducing her to rare tears as she begs Ichigo to send the child onward, a breakdown he had not witnessed from her since Masaki's passing. She sees a Hollow seize Yuzu at their mother's grave, gets caught up in Chad's awakening, and gradually works out that her brother leads a secret life as a Shinigami, even grabbing his arm to keep him from confronting the first Arrancar. Through his long absences she reassures Yuzu while privately missing him. In the seventeen months after Ichigo loses his powers, her own spiritual strength grows, and she quietly buys spirit-repelling charms from Kisuke Urahara, deciding it is now her turn to shield her brother. She and the household later fall briefly under Shukuro Tsukishima's influence, and years afterward, with a new generation growing up, she greets Rukia's family for a relaxed reunion. Her gifts run to keen spiritual awareness and a soccer-honed strike she calls her Karin-Style Annihilation Shoot, kicking a ball hard enough to fell weak Hollows.
