The head of the house, Marenoshin, once resembled his son Marechiyo closely, down to the purple collar and matching build, though in retirement he has grown heavier and drapes himself in gold jewelry and sunglasses beneath a mane of curly hair. His wife Mareka favors a green kimono, pearls, and a pink scarf, while their large daughter Maremi layers a purple robe over her kimono and wears bold makeup. Marejirosaburo is a bespectacled boy in a blue kimono and red bow tie, and the youngest, Mareyo, is a light-haired girl in a flower-patterned pink kimono.

Snobbery runs in the family; Marenoshin looks down on the poorer ranks of the Gotei 13 much as his son does, greeting guests with barbs about how commoners like to enjoy themselves. Marejirosaburo fancies himself a lover of fine literature and sniffs that his sister cannot appreciate his books. Little Mareyo dotes on Marechiyo, forever begging for his time and bursting into tears whenever he turns her away.

Marenoshin once served as lieutenant of the Second Division under Captain Yoruichi Shihoin a century ago and commanded the Onmitsukido's Patrol Corps, roles later inherited by his son Marechiyo; he was said to outmatch the boy in skill before leaving the Gotei 13 for a life of luxury. The clan's estate stands among the grandest in the Seireitei.

During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Marechiyo returned home while his captain was away, brushing off Mareyo's pleas to play. When the Wandenreich swapped the Seireitei for their own city, he tried to explain to a tearful Mareyo that duty was calling him away, only for the Sternritter BG9 to attack. BG9 impaled Mareyo with a tendril to pry answers from Marechiyo, who afterward carried both his wounded sister and Sui-Feng to safety. Momo Hinamori and Shinji Hirako cleared the Soldat in their path, and Hinamori healed the girl before she was moved to the laboratory to remain among the Shinigami.
