Raika
CharacterRaika is the Zanpakutō of Shūsuke Amagai, the anime-only captain of the Third Division. A fire-natured blade, it heats itself white-hot to overpower an opponent and flings flame from the hook of its released form.
Appearance
At rest Raika resembles a short kodachi, its hilt colored olive green and set with a bronze guard shaped like a bow, worn in a red sheath slung from Amagai's waist. Released, it stretches into a white longsword ending in a hook, its grip framed by curved, shell-like pipes. Those pipes vent flame the instant it changes, and the fire rushing through the openings sounds a note much like a trumpet.
Personality
Everything about the blade turns on heat. Raika's central trick is to raise its own temperature until it glows a fiercer color, at which point it grows strong enough to shrug off and hurl back Ichigo Kurosaki's Getsuga Tenshō. The trumpet-like blare of its pipes is as much a signature as the flame itself, heralding the weapon before it strikes.
History
Amagai wakes the sword by holding it inverted behind his back as he speaks the command Sever. In Shikai he can pool fire into the crook of the hook and fling large fireballs across the field, an assault fierce enough to answer even the ice of Hyōrinmaru. By driving the same gathered fire into the earth, he splits the ground with racing fissures of flame. Raika belongs to a captain who exists only in the anime, where it forms the foundation of his Bankai, Raika Gōen Kaku.
