Summary

Drawing on his Bakkōtō for extra strength, Makoto Kibune belittles Izuru Kira as unworthy of his lieutenant's rank and presses the attack with his Zanpakutō, Reppū. Izuru holds it off with Wabisuke and demands to know why Makoto joined the Third Division, learning that Makoto craves rank only to display his true power and dreams of the Kasumiōji Clan reshaping the world through the Bakkōtō. When Izuru realizes the weapon is controlling Makoto and that it has begun neutralizing Wabisuke's ability, he presses on regardless, declaring his duty to protect his division. Their final exchange leaves Izuru victorious, and Kanō, Aida, and Inose rush to him as he collapses.

Briefed on the situation, Suì-Fēng weighs what to do about Amagai and Ichigo Kurosaki before Yoruichi Shihōin approaches with something to share. Shūsuke Amagai and Ichigo drive off Rurichiyo Kasumiōji's captors, only to find the girl they rescued was a decoy. A Jigokuchō directs Amagai to the stadium, where he and the others survey the aftermath of Izuru and Makoto's battle and piece together the Kasumiōji Clan's schemes. Renji Abarai arrives, having tracked Izuru's faint reiatsu, and reassures a wary Amagai that he means no harm. Amagai decides he and Ichigo should enter the Kasumiōji Manor in search of Rurichiyo while Renji reports to the Captain-Commander.

Renji carries the Bakkōtō-bearing Reppū to the First Division, and Ichigo's group heads for the Second Division barracks, encountering the Tenth Division on the way. Hitsugaya insists on escorting them to Yamamoto first, and when Amagai steps forward to clear a path, the two captains clash and release their Shikai, ice against flame. Amagai urges Ichigo and the others to flee, and as they do, Rukia Kuchiki intercepts Rangiku Matsumoto so Ichigo and Shū Kannogi can slip away toward the manor.
