Byakuya Kuchiki demands to know why Ichigo Kurosaki keeps hurling himself into Rukia's execution, then abandons words for force, only for Ichigo to shove his blade aside and match him strike for strike. Vowing to recapture and behead Rukia himself, Byakuya charges anew. Below the hill, Renji Abarai carries Rukia through a stand of dead trees, urging her to stop shouldering every fault alone and to lean her burden on him and Ichigo, a kindness that moves her to gratitude.

At the execution ground, Sui-Feng downs Sentaro Kotsubaki and pins Kiyone Kotetsu, branding her a traitor, until a masked Yoruichi Shihoin tackles her off the cliff and unmasks. Yamamoto blocks Ukitake and, brushing off Renji's flight as a trivial matter, condemns Shunsui and Ukitake for disgracing their rank. Shunsui drags Ukitake away, while Retsu Unohana ferries the wounded to safety aboard her Shikai, Minazuki.

In the Third Old City, Yamamoto reappears ahead of his fleeing former students.
