As a Hollow mask spreads across his face, Ichigo's soul refuses to shatter, and he wakes inside a toppled city to meet the spirit of his own blade. There Zangetsu reveals a hidden well of Shinigami power and challenges him to seize it before the inner world crumbles.
Watching the mask crawl over Ichigo, Urahara halts Ururu from finishing him and points out that the boy's body is staying whole instead of bursting apart the way a Hollow normally forms. That resistance, he explains, means Ichigo could still surface as a Shinigami if given a little more time.
Ichigo, meanwhile, comes to on the flank of a skyscraper in a sideways cityscape, where a man perched on a pole addresses him. The stranger insists Ichigo already knows his name, yet the sound never reaches him. When Ichigo realizes he is seated over a sheer drop, he plummets, and the man, Zangetsu, falls alongside him while dryly mocking his panic. Zangetsu tells him a Shinigami can harden the spirit particles underfoot to stand on air, as Ichigo once did against Acidwire.
Then comes the revelation: the powers Byakuya stripped away were only the borrowed ones from Rukia, and Ichigo's own Shinigami strength, awakened by her, still lies buried in his soul. As the tower breaks into a rain of countless boxes, Ichigo must find the single box holding that power before everything collapses. Remembering Uryu's lesson that a Shinigami's spirit ribbon glows red, he spots a crimson thread, hauls in its box, and draws out a sword hilt. Zangetsu urges him to pull it free, and in the waking world a burst of spiritual pressure blasts up from the pit.
Urahara reads Ichigo's intact body as proof of resistance to full Hollowfication. Ichigo enters his inner world and encounters the spirit Zangetsu for the first time, learning he possesses his own Shinigami powers separate from Rukia's. Using the red spirit-ribbon trick, he locates and grasps the hilt of his zanpakuto.
