Suspended by the Tentoken and pressing Zangetsu against Kikoo, Ichigo greets a stunned Rukia, who demands to know why he came and insists he cannot beat her brother. She claims to have accepted her death and tells him to leave, while a disbelieving Sui-Feng wonders how a single sword could stop the force of a million blades. Shunsui confirms with Nanao that this is the intruder from Sado's reports, noting that a Ryoka is the one saving the day.
Kikoo screeches and draws back for a second strike, but before it can fall a cable tipped with a metal rod loops around the phoenix's neck. Ukitake has activated the Shihoin Shield to make the catch, arriving with Sentaro and Kiyone. Recognizing the Shihoin crest on the device, Sui-Feng realizes the two captains mean to destroy the Sokyoku and orders Omaeda to stop them. Undeterred, Shunsui and Ukitake draw their swords and cut down opposite sides of the shield, driving a surge of power up the cable that bursts Kikoo apart and splits the halberd within it in two.
As embers rain down, Ichigo climbs to the top of the scaffold and spins Zangetsu, announcing that he will wreck the stand. Rukia protests that it was built to endure a million Zanpakuto, but he tells her to watch and drives his blade into it, blowing out its center and cracking the cliff beneath. Rising from the wreckage with Rukia under his arm, he declares that this time he really will save her. She tearfully insists she will not thank him, and he lets it stand as Byakuya watches from below.
