Summary

The black Cero leaves Ichigo stripped of his mask and tumbling from the sky. Ulquiorra intercepts him and drives him into a pillar, declaring that humans can never stand equal to Hollows. When Ichigo struggles upright, the Espada calls the effort useless and opens a gash across his chest, then chases him down to strike again. Below, Uryu and Orihime reel at the sheer Reiatsu of the clash, and Orihime pleads with Uryu to carry her up onto the dome, which he agrees to only reluctantly.

Key Events

Atop a pillar, Ulquiorra lifts the spent Ichigo by his tattered robes and asks why he will not surrender when the difference between them is so plain. Ichigo throws the question back, refusing to quit merely because his opponent is stronger, and swears that he will win. Ulquiorra dismisses the claim as nonsense, tells Ichigo he has never known true despair, and begins to change into a wholly new form.

Notes

The chapter carries much of the fortieth volume, THE LUST, and was adapted in Episode 270. Both the collected release and its Weekly Shonen Jump printing use the title The Lust.
