This Volume 41 chapter shows the full horror of Baraggan's aging power as his rotting miasma costs Suì-Fēng her arm, while Hitsugaya and Harribel wage a seesaw battle over who truly commands the water between them.
Suì-Fēng recoils at Baraggan Louisenbairn's released shape, a gaunt, skull-faced figure evoking the Western image of the Grim Reaper. Wherever he steps the rooftop decays beneath his feet, and he warns the captain that all things near him age and die. When she screams at Marechiyo Ōmaeda to flee, Baraggan only laughs and tells her she stands no better chance than her lieutenant.
Baraggan exhales a smoke-like miasma that rots whatever it touches. Suì-Fēng bolts, but the haze grazes her left hand and strips it to bare bone. As the decay creeps up her arm, she cries out for Ōmaeda to sever the limb; he reluctantly complies, and the amputated arm hits the ground as nothing but bone, saving her life. Baraggan is amused that even a Soul Reaper can be gripped by the fear of death.
The other duel becomes a contest of opposing elements. Harribel drowns Hitsugaya in a torrent of water, which he freezes with his blade and turns back against her, briefly locking her sword arm in ice. He argues that her command over water is useless when he can convert it to ice, but she counters that the reverse holds true as well, blocking his ice dragon with a watery shield before engulfing him in a massive surge. Episodes 274 and 275 adapt the chapter's events.
