Aizen turns on his betrayer without a shred of mercy, tearing Gin apart and revealing that even the traitor's gambit fed the Hogyoku's evolution. As Gin lies dying, memories of his boyhood promise to Rangiku surface, and Ichigo returns at the very last second.
Waking on the rooftop from a dream of a snowy childhood night, Rangiku realizes Gin used the spell Hakufuku to put her under and keep her clear of danger. Below her, he stands cut open by Aizen, the Hogyoku crumbling and reassembling in his hand into a cross that echoes the one lodged in Aizen's chest.
Aizen recalls cracking the riddle of the Hogyoku long before Urahara ever did, and the multitude of souls he hollowed out chasing a completion the orb kept refusing him, which is why he set out to claim Urahara's version. He catches Gin's wrist, wrenches the arm away, and runs him through, explaining that Gin's fear was exactly the fuel the Hogyoku required to evolve. With mock gratitude he flings the dying man through a building.
