Summary

A flashback returns to Aes Noedt as a bedridden invalid tethered to a respirator, for whom every breath is agony and continued life feels like a burden he cannot shed. Dreading a hell worse than his present suffering, he is visited by Yhwach, who resolves to reward the man's sheer endurance with power. In the present, locked inside Hakka no Togame, Aes accepts his end, begs his emperor's pardon, and shatters as the crown of his monstrous form is blown apart.

Draped in a frost-white kimono with pale hair, Rukia begins to crack apart herself, until Byakuya clasps her hand, letting ice creep over his own fingers, and coaxes her to release the technique slowly. He calls the Bankai splendid yet warns that a single misstep could cost her life, urging patience and reminding her that a blade swung at the price of one's own existence wins nothing. He then asks her to stand with him in defense of Soul Society, and she agrees.

Nearby, Isane Kotetsu tends the unconscious Rose and Kensei while Yachiru returns with more of the Quincy's fine bedding, cheerfully scavenging supplies while Kenpachi is away. Just as Isane marvels that they have gone unnoticed, Guenael Lee finishes her sentence for her and materializes at her back. He boasts that he will never be seen again; Yachiru swings and connects with nothing as he blinks out of view, then strikes her across the face, crowing that his presence vanishes from both sight and memory.
