Summary

Riding to Tokyo with Makima, Denji is won over by her unexpected kindness, from buying him udon to feeding him when he plays helpless. By the time they reach Public Safety's headquarters he is sure he loves her. Makima pairs him with the senior hunter Aki Hayakawa, dashing his hope of working at her side.

Out on patrol, Aki beats Denji in an alley and orders him to quit, insisting that those who take up the work without real resolve always die. Denji answers with kicks to the groin, declaring that the decent life he has tasted is worth dying for. Makima brushes off their feud and assigns Denji to Aki's experimental unit, warning that any refusal to work will see him put down as a Devil. Aki is made his housemate and minder.

After a messy first mission against a Fiend, where Denji insists on a clean kill out of misplaced sympathy, his clashing values with Aki deepen. Settling into an easier life, Denji fixes on a new ambition: to fondle a woman's chest. Makima then introduces his fresh partner, the Blood Fiend Power, whose hunger drives her to obliterate a Sea Cucumber Devil in a gory spectacle.

Notes

The second episode adapts material from chapters 2 through 5 and bridges the Introduction and Bat Devil arcs. Its ending theme is Zanki. The anime trims a scene of Denji rescuing a youngster from the Muscle Devil, and his jingle about union perks loses its lyrics.
