The cold of the Schwer Mountains nearly defeats Frieren, who has to be carried while she remembers the Hero Party's early days. A flashback recalls the king sending them off with a mere handful of copper coins, and Himmel sharing the story of his sword. Though it resembles the fabled Hero's blade, it is only a replica gifted by a grateful merchant, and Himmel reveals he set out to become a genuine hero precisely to prove a teasing Heiter wrong.

The party arrives at the fortified Village of the Sword, greeted by its young 49th chief. Frieren owes the village a long-delayed promise to thin its monsters, and the next day she helps cull a pack of wolf-like beasts and destroys the so-called Lord of the Mountains. The creatures are drawn to a cave where the true Sword of the Hero remains lodged in stone. Frieren confirms that Himmel never managed to draw it, yet saved the world regardless, proving a real hero needs no legendary weapon. The embarrassing detail was buried by those who preferred a flawless legend.

Reaching the Appetit Region, the group settles at an inn on Stark's eighteenth birthday. Frieren's intended gift, a potion that dissolves clothing, ends up poured over her by a disgusted Fern. While hunting for a present, Fern hears townsfolk describe Stark's many small kindnesses. He confesses he never received birthday gifts, having been raised in a warrior village that scorned the weak, and recalls fleeing a demon attack that his brother Stoltz faced. Fern reassures him and helps him choose a silver bracelet.

Back at the inn, Frieren serves enormous hamburger steaks, the way Eisen always marked Stark's birthday. The dwarf's custom honored warriors for their effort, and Eisen counted anyone who tried their hardest as a warrior. The memory ties back to Stoltz, who once cooked the same dish for Stark and told him to run and live.

A flashback reveals Himmel's sword is a replica and that he chose heroism to disprove Heiter's old jab. At the Village of the Sword, Frieren slays the Lord of the Mountains and explains that Himmel failed to draw the genuine blade yet became a true hero anyway, a fact concealed to protect his legend.

In the Appetit Region, the party marks Stark's eighteenth birthday. He recounts being raised among warriors who dismissed him and fleeing a demon attack that his brother Stoltz faced. Fern helps him pick a silver bracelet, and Frieren serves the hamburger steaks Eisen always made to honor him.

The anime opens with the party traveling, while the corresponding manga chapter begins on the Hero Party flashback. Frieren's collapse and Stark's offer to carry her are new to the adaptation, and the panel of a young Himmel rescuing the merchant goes unshown. Two scenes drawn from volume extras are folded in, including Fern carrying Frieren through the snow and the closing potion gag.

Several memories are anime original, among them Himmel's flashbacks during the talk about his legacy and Stoltz's appearance as Stark sits before the cave. As Frieren rummages through her suitcase, she pauses on a ring bearing a mirrored-lotus motif before finding Eisen's recipe, a quiet nod toward a later episode.
