Summary

Dawn breaks over the battlefield where Aura fell, and Frieren offers a prayer for the soldiers freed at last from the demon's control. Graf Granat, far from treating her as a suspect, pardons the party and thanks her for the respect shown to his region's dead. Among the bodies his men recover is his own lost son, and his gratitude toward Frieren deepens.

The town celebrates while the trio recover, accept lavish gifts including winter clothing, and attend a funeral for the fallen. The Graf grants Frieren a grimoire she requested, which she cheerfully admits is a forgery she wants only for her collection. Before they leave, he warns that the Northern Plateau cannot be crossed without a first-class mage, a credential issued by the Continental Magic Association. Since Frieren holds no modern certification, the party sets a new goal: the first-class exam held in Äußerst, reached through the Schwer Mountains.

Winter arrives hard. Even short of the mountains, a savage blizzard overtakes them and Stark collapses, forcing Fern to carry him to a remembered cabin. Inside, Frieren finds a tall, pointy-eared man doing squats. He turns out to be Kraft, an elf monk who has not met another of his kind in three centuries. The weather traps everyone together for half a year of chores, training, and shared meals.

Kraft carves a pendant for Fern and speaks with Frieren about faith. He believes in the Goddess because he needs to: everyone who witnessed his great deeds is long dead, and he longs for someone to remember the marks a life leaves behind. Frieren recalls a similar talk with Heiter, who once offered to honor her in the Goddess's place. She tells Kraft she already has someone to praise her, though that friend now waits in Heaven. When the thaw comes, the two elves part, with Kraft promising this is no final goodbye.

Notes

The anime adds a close shot of Aura's Scales of Obedience left on the ground, the demon's only remnant, which the manga omits. Flashbacks of Himmel and Eisen nearly executed for casual speech are shown through an executioner's sword in the anime, whereas the manga places their heads in a guillotine.

Other adaptation choices expand the source. Stark's feverish dream of Eisen and a giant sundae is lengthened from a brief mention, and the mages use a floating spell to move Kraft's supplies rather than hauling them through a storm. The cabin's Goddess iconography and the successive joining of the mealtime prayer are anime additions, as is a closing beat of Stark catching Fern on the snowy roof.
