Episode 24: Perfect Replicas

At the magic association, Genau tells Falsch that the dungeon's overlord is a Spiegel, a beast out of the mythical age that copies the memories of those who enter and births substantial doubles matching their power, mana, and technique. Defeating such replicas without losing anyone, he notes, demands cool self-analysis and teamwork, the kind of puzzle suited to Sense's pacifist leanings. Inside the dungeon, Denken's group flees a barrage from Frieren's double and regroups beyond the hall to plan.

Cornered at a dead end, Übel leaves the wounded Land with an escape golem and charges her own replica alone. Because Sorganeil requires sight of the whole target and the two are evenly matched, the duel turns on luck, which Übel claims has never favored her. When the clone snares her, she springs a trap, Land slips behind it, the copy turns, and Übel cuts it down. She admits she gambled on Land's kindness, manufacturing a moment where he would have to save her so she might learn something new about him.

Frieren's group uncovers a concealed chamber behind a shifting wall, its mural depicting the entombed king of the Unified Dynasty era, before joining Denken's party at the threshold to the depths. Hoping to crack the Frieren clone, Methode tests restraint and then hypnosis on the real Frieren, but both slide off her layered mental defenses. Methode suspects an expert could find a gap and names the second-class mage Edel, though she doubts hypnosis even works on a mindless copy.

Elsewhere, Edel, Dünste, and Blei face Sense's replica and its countless blades of enchanted hair. Edel manages eye contact and commands it to kneel, only for the clone to run her through, proving it merely imitates a mind without owning one. She breaks her bottle and escapes, leaving the others to flee. As Wirbel's team buries its own Ehre clone under a collapsed ceiling, Frieren concludes brute force may be the only path, and Fern quietly volunteers that she may be capable of destroying the double herself.

The order of scenes was flipped from the manga, with Genau's lecture preceding Denken's retreat. The hidden chamber and its royal mural are an anime creation, designed by concept artist Seiko Yoshioka in coordination with the manga's authors to flesh out the world's history. The fight against Sense's clone is extended, and the montage linking the scattered groups before the strategy talk is likewise original.
