What Year Is She?

The shy-seeming Kagura reaches the house, spots Kyo, and immediately batters him for making her worry. She declares herself his fiancee, though Kyo notes he only agreed as a child while she was waving a knife. Taking Tohru for a romantic rival, Kagura tries to challenge her, then freezes the moment she threatens to reveal Kyo's true form.

Determined to prove her love, Kagura cooks an enormous feast, but her fury at Kyo's refusal to eat it wrecks the meal. His irritation wounds her, and she rushes off for more groceries, walking back alongside Tohru. Along the way Kagura understands that Tohru's fondness for Kyo grew from loving the cat of the zodiac tale, and the two end up making hamburgers together, while Kyo later shares his enthusiasm for martial arts with Tohru.

The following day Kagura is hurt again by Kyo's coldness, then gets accidentally embraced by a rushing paperboy and turns into a boar, with Yuki stepping in before the boy can see. Tohru tells Kagura she wishes she could be like her, able to see the good in the person she loves. As Kagura heads home, Tohru answers a call from her grandfather bringing worrying news.

The title comes from a line of Tohru's, and the childhood flashback of how Kagura first met Kyo actually originates in chapter 68 of the manga. The episode brings the homeroom teacher Mayuko Shiraki into the anime for the first time, placing her in the role of relaying the grandfather's phone call. Nearly all of the cooking and shopping built around Kagura's jealousy is anime-only material, which displaced a manga scene of Shigure sending her to a bedroom for the night. It adapts chapter 5.
