What's Your Name?

Shaken by her talk with Kyo, Tohru dwells on the guilt he carries over both his mother's death and Kyoko's, the sorrow in his eyes still aching in her chest. Akito arrives clutching the knife she used on Kureno and drifts toward Tohru, murmuring that the end has come and pressing on the fear of abandonment they secretly share. Meanwhile Yuki pursues Kyo and crosses paths with a drunk Shigure, telling him only that Kyo has made Tohru cry.

Akito accuses Tohru of stealing the Zodiac's affection and leaving her the villain destined to be forsaken, then slashes her arm when she draws near. Tohru grasps how alone Akito has always been beneath a mask of strength, treated since birth as something set above the circle rather than within it, clinging to words like eternity because the alternative terrifies her. Akito drops the knife and slaps her repeatedly, insisting she cannot be fooled or won over, and Tohru concedes she is right, admitting she once craved her own unchanging forever built on her mother's memory until falling in love with Kyo taught her that feelings cannot be bound.

Akito flees toward the cliff whose collapse once destroyed Tohru's tent, crying that she cannot bear a world of strangers and hollow promises of love. Tohru asks to start over as if they had never met, offering her hand in friendship. Akito slaps it away, then reaches back, only for the ground under Tohru to give way and send her over the edge. Screaming for help, Akito runs to Shigure, admits she stabbed Kureno but denies pushing Tohru, and Yuki calls an ambulance as he races to find her. Kyo overhears the news, sprints to the scene, and, discovering Tohru bloodied, begs her not to die before kissing her as she regains consciousness and reaches for his cheek.

Tohru supplies the title line. The episode adapts chapters 121 and 122, portions of 123, and the back half of 124, following the earlier chapters closely while drawing on the later ones to fill out its runtime. In the aftermath Momiji finds Akito outside the hospital and urges her to cherish Tohru and Kureno if she truly regrets hurting them, invoking the tale of the foolish traveler, and Akito finally enters Tohru's room to be met with an offered hand. Shigure privately admits regret over the plan he set in motion. Various flashbacks of Akito reflecting on her treatment of the Sohma were added for the anime.
