I'm Disappointed in You

Picking up where the previous episode left off, Kyo and Tohru share a conversation heavy with pain in the rain. Kyo forces out the buried truth about the day Kyoko died, pushing Tohru away even as she refuses to stop loving him, and the hour closes with Akito arriving at the house armed with a knife.

When Tohru says there is something she must tell him, Kyo asks if she loves him, then walks off into the rain, pitying her for loving someone like him. He confesses that Kyoko would still be alive if not for him. As a child he had befriended her after she noticed his hair color and learned his mother was dead, and through her he first heard of Tohru. He once promised to find Tohru when she went missing but could not, later recognizing that the blue hat that helped her belonged to him. After Kyoko urged him not to brand people as good or bad, a hurt Kyo cut off contact with her.

Years later he spotted Kyoko on a street corner and hesitated to approach. Seeing the car coming, he thought to pull her clear but feared transforming and froze, choosing his own life over hers. He recalls his mother's suicide and his father's blame, and believes Kyoko's final words were that she would never forgive him. Blocking out the memory, he channeled his hatred into rivalry with Yuki until the blue hat in Tohru's room unlocked the truth. He also recounts Akito's bargain that he would join the zodiac if he defeated Yuki, the reason he first came to Shigure's house.

Kyo asks whether Tohru can forgive him, though he refuses to forgive himself and does not want her to either. Tohru rejects his claim about Kyoko's last words, insisting they do not match the woman she knew, and tells him she loves him and always will. Kyo bitterly says he is disappointed in her and bolts, with Yuki running after him as Akito approaches the house with a blade.

The title comes from a line spoken by Kyo. The episode adapts two chapters and makes a handful of additions, including the shot of Kyo stepping in Kyoko's blood at the accident scene and present-day Kyo watching the anguish of his younger selves after the deaths of his mother and Kyoko. The lines explaining that he had repressed the memory of Kyoko's death, and recovered it upon seeing the cap, were also written for the anime.
