You Cried for Me

With school out for the summer, Mayuko Shiraki agrees to look after her family's bookstore after her mother phones to say that her father has been hospitalized. Sorting through stock, she uncovers photographs of herself alongside Kana and Hatori, and another taken on Kana's wedding day. Shigure, claiming to be a loyal customer awaiting an order, wanders in, much to the irritation of Mayuko, who introduces him as an old flame. The visit sends her memory drifting back roughly two years.

Mayuko recalls how Kana first brought her together with Hatori and how she quietly fell for him despite his obvious devotion to Kana. Through Kana she also met Shigure and Ayame, and Shigure, reading her feelings plainly, urged her to chase Hatori before eventually asking her out himself. After Akito blinded Hatori and Kana's spirit broke, Shigure drove Mayuko out to the Sohma estate so she could look in on her friend. Once Kana's memories were suppressed and she recovered, she encouraged Mayuko to pursue Hatori, unaware of the pain still tangled among them all.

Back in the present, Shigure engineers a reunion by sending Hatori to collect a book at the shop. When Hatori later confesses that he is not built for happiness, Mayuko weeps openly on his behalf, and he thanks her for the tears he cannot shed himself, admitting the new girlfriend Shigure mentioned never existed. The two agree to go get a drink, and a satisfied Shigure phones to gloat over his matchmaking. The title comes from Hatori's gratitude to Mayuko for crying in his place, and the anime adds her opening call with her mother among other small changes.
