Makoto Kibune

Kibune slicks back his reddish-brown hair, letting a single strand curl forward, and watches through yellow eyes behind purple-rimmed half-glasses. Beneath the standard uniform he wears a light purple sweater. In his Academy years his hair sat shorter and his frames were oval.

The warm, approachable manner Kibune projects hides a deeply self-serving nature obsessed with power. He has no patience for failure and dismisses anyone who falls short as trash, an elitism that dates to the Academy, where he prized only his own advancement and would trample or sacrifice whoever stood in his path. So convinced is he of his own excellence that he refuses to accept his missing sense of camaraderie was what stalled his promotion.

A standout student at the Shin'ō Academy, Kibune nonetheless went unrecruited because his contempt for classmates outweighed his talent. When he pressed Gengorō Ōnabara for an explanation, the instructor told him grades were only part of it and that he had to discover his own shortcomings, advice he could not grasp. Even after mastering his Shikai and excelling at slaying Hollows, his indifference toward comrades stalled his career, and a trial before Central 46 for wounding a fellow Soul Reaper drove him to resign and enlist in the Patrol Corps beneath Shūsuke Amagai. Around then he entered Gyōkaku Kumoi's service and received a Bakkōtō that vastly amplified his strength.

Across the anime-only arc built around new captain Shūsuke Amagai, Kibune is named the Third Division's Third Seat, feigns loyalty while funneling aid to the Kasumiōji Clan, and murders the squad member Sugama for spotting him leaving the clan's manor. His deceit unravels when Izuru Kira hunts him down. In their duel Izuru uses Wabisuke to keep doubling the weight of Kibune's released blade Reppū, a three-bladed weapon he steadies and levitates through his Bakkōtō; once Izuru sees through the crutch, he piles on enough weight to break Kibune's defense, and the ravenous Bakkōtō devours its wielder, leaving him to burn.
