A Fleeting Moment

Amid the battle in Shiganshina, Eren's severed head drops from the sky and lands in Zeke's outstretched palm, contact made an instant before death. Eren wakes in a desert crossed by a pillar of branching light: the coordinate, the junction of every path, where an older and wearier Zeke has waited for what feels like years, shackled to the sand. A ragged girl wanders the expanse. Zeke names her Ymir Fritz, the Founder, endlessly shaping Titans in a place with no shortage of time.

Zeke urges his brother to issue the command that will leave the Eldian race unable to bear children. Eren refuses, admitting his cooperation was theater designed to deliver him exactly here, then calls on Ymir himself. She ignores him and kneels to Zeke instead. The chains, Zeke explains, embodied the vow renouncing war, and he has learned to shed them; unlike past royals, he entered this place untouched by Karl Fritz's ideology, and Ymir obeys royal blood alone. Eren was a key. The door now stands open, and chains close around him in turn.

Blaming Grisha's indoctrination for his brother's defiance, and recalling how Tom Ksaver once rescued him from the same man, Zeke resolves to rescue Eren too by walking him through their father's memories. The tour unsettles the teacher more than the student. They watch Grisha dote on the infant Eren, leverage his medical practice to reach the powerful, and locate the Reiss chapel years before the Wall ever fell, yet again and again set the Restorationist mission aside for his family's sake. Zeke concedes that Grisha appears to have genuinely loved his second son, perhaps having learned from how he failed his first, and that he never stopped thinking of Zeke at all. In one memory a drowsing Grisha murmurs an apology to Zeke, then looks directly at the spot where he stands and asks if he is there, before dismissing the bearded old man as a dream. Shaken, Zeke watches Eren reach for the basement door and calls for the next memory.

Gabi's shot decapitates Eren, but Zeke's touch pulls him into the coordinate before his life ends, activating the Founding Titan's power.

Eren reveals his support for the euthanasia plan was a pretense and attempts to command Ymir Fritz, who submits only to royal blood.

Zeke frees himself from the vow renouncing war and claims control of the Founder, reducing Eren to a prisoner.

The brothers enter Grisha's memories, where Zeke expects proof of fanaticism and instead finds paternal devotion.

Grisha appears to perceive Zeke inside his own memory, a moment neither brother can explain.

Hajime Isayama's 120th chapter arrived as the second entry of volume 30, published August 9, 2019 in Japan and a day earlier in English. It sits within the War for Paradis arc between Two Brothers and Memories of the Future, and its events were animated across the episodes bearing those titles.

The chapter formally establishes the coordinate as a traversable space, the mechanics of the vow renouncing war, and Ymir Fritz's submission to royal blood, foundations on which the story's endgame is built.
