Chapter 59

A steamy scene from Berlint in Love gives Becky ideas. Glancing from the television to the framed photo of the Forgers on her mantel, she phones Anya with a flimsy story about being in the neighborhood, and moments later she is at the door, her inner monologue making it plain she intends to confess her feelings to Loid, over Martha's silent disapproval. Loid's warm greeting and his thanks for her friendship with Anya knock Becky flat with a lovestruck look that reminds Anya of Fiona.

The house tour exposes the gulf between the two families' fortunes. Becky mistakes the living room for a storage vestibule and marvels that her dog Wiesel's doghouse dwarfs Anya's bedroom, prompting Anya to end the tour early. Learning Yor is out walking Bond, Becky slots herself into the drama scene from that morning and fantasizes about marriage to Loid. Anya balks, then reads Becky's mind, finds the perks of a rich stepmother persuasive, and signs on as her wingman. While Becky wonders whether Loid might actually be interested in her, he is mining their chat for intelligence on her father Byron's business dealings.

Yor's return sets off Becky's rivalry instincts. Hair flips and other drama-derived techniques fail, so Becky escalates: seated beside Loid at tea, she slumps against his arm and pretends the drink has made her tipsy. Yor, horrified that she somehow served a child alcohol, scoops Becky up and sprints for a hospital, tossing the girl skyward to shield her from an oncoming car, absorbing the hit herself, and rolling to catch her. Becky confesses the act and apologizes, braced for anger that never comes; Yor is simply glad she is unhurt.

At a nearby park, Becky asks why Loid chose Yor, and Yor's foggy memory of the night he called her strong gets taken at face value. When Loid and Anya catch up, Becky attacks a strongman game to prove her own strength and folds under the hammer's weight. Yor, assuming Becky wanted the grand prize for Loid, demolishes the machine with one swing and leaves everyone speechless. Misreading Loid's stunned face as admiration for powerful women, Becky begs Yor for training, and Martha later arrives to find her charge learning how to throw punches.

Becky enters the Forger home. Her first visit and her first meeting with Loid cement her crush and expose the comic gap between the Blackbell and Forger lifestyles.

Anya joins the scheme. After sampling Becky's thoughts about life with a wealthy stepmother, Anya throws her support behind the doomed courtship.

The fake tipsy gambit backfires. Becky's soap opera move triggers Yor's hospital sprint, complete with a car collision Yor simply walks off.

Yor destroys the strongman game. One swing wrecks the machine, convincing Becky that strength is the way to Loid's heart.

Training begins. Becky recruits Yor as her strength coach, to Martha's bewilderment at pickup time.

Mission 59 runs 27 pages in Volume 9 and released on February 7, 2022. Episode 36 of the anime adapts it, and the cover gathers the drama characters Vincent and Sonia alongside Becky and the four Forgers.

The framed photo Becky keeps over her fireplace is the one she took from Anya back in Chapter 25. Tatsuya Endo wanted a Becky-centered story for Volume 9 because she appears on its cover; his original plan for a birthday party chapter failed to come together and became this visit instead.
