Chapter 91

On the way to Anya's bus stop, Yor and Anya run into the Authens and mention the charity bazaar for disabled veterans that Yor is helping to run at the city square. Barbara knows of the event, and Yor extends an invitation to the couple.

At the bazaar, the Berlint City Hall staff haul boxes while Matthew McMahon warns them that both the Wounded Veteran Alliance and the Lady Patriots Society are watching. Yor mentions knowing Melinda Desmond, the society's leader, and nobody believes her. The mood darkens when Millie, surrounded by wounded soldiers, abruptly says she cannot stay. Society members scold the clerks back to work, and while Camilla and Sharon swallow the insults, Millie snaps: the men around them came home from the war, but her father never did. The women dismiss her grief as selfishness, and Yor plants herself between Millie and the group's ringleader. Sharing that she too lost her parents to the war, Yor hoists ten boxes at once and asks why women who cannot do the same insist Millie's suffering matches theirs. Sharon piles on, and when the ringleader claims the older generation suffered uniquely, Yor answers that the young carried their own burdens, thinking of herself and Yuri.

The humiliated leader raises a hand toward Yor, only for a disguised Melinda to catch it. Her warm reunion with Yor stuns everyone, but Millie erupts again, blaming Donovan Desmond for starting the war. Matthew corrects her history, noting Donovan became Prime Minister only after the fighting began. Melinda responds with empathy rather than anger, telling Millie she would also resent anyone who cost her family, and thanks her for her work before leaving, quieting her own outraged members with a reminder that policing one another echoes wartime repression.

Afterward Millie opens up about losing her father young and how loneliness fuels her outbursts, and she chooses to keep working alongside her coworkers. The women tease Yor, dub her a "kindly gorilla" instead of a robot, and offer to teach her what "posh" means over drinks. That night Yor greets her family with a newly learned fancy greeting, leaving Loid baffled.

Millie's surname, Myers, and her backstory are revealed: her father died in the war between Ostania and Westalis when she was small.

Yor publicly defends Millie from the Lady Patriots Society and reveals she lost her own parents to the war.

Melinda Desmond appears in disguise, stops a member from striking Yor, and reconciles with Millie.

Yor's standing among her coworkers noticeably warms, capped by after-work drinks and a "posh" lesson.
