Chapter 118

At Kamii University, Hide welcomes Touka and she starts asking what Kaneki was really like. Hide remembers a timid, book-loving boy who drew frequent teasing yet let every taunt roll off him. He recalls that Kaneki lost his father early and later his mother, who worked herself to death, and he notes how alone the boy became afterward. During a school play, Kaneki was pushed into the lead role and carried it off well.

Touka cuts in, sure that Kaneki is tucked away somewhere safe with his books. Hide points out a telltale habit: whenever Kaneki lies, his hand drifts to his chin.

Elsewhere, at the Special Class Investigator Meeting, the CCG debates the Centipede, and Yoshitoki confirms that two separate Owls are in play. Meanwhile Kaneki returns to Anteiku, where he voices a growing suspicion that the One-Eyed Owl who leads Aogiri Tree may be Yoshimura's child.

Hide recounts Kaneki's childhood, including the loss of both parents and his deep loneliness, and reveals the chin-touching tell that betrays Kaneki's lies. At the CCG's Special Class meeting, Yoshitoki confirms the existence of two distinct Owls. Back at Anteiku, Kaneki theorizes that the One-Eyed Owl commanding Aogiri Tree is Yoshimura's own child.

The book one of Kaneki's classmates reads aloud is Mother Goose (まざあぐうす, Mazā Gūsu), a 1921 collection of translations by Hakushū Kitahara. The chapter's Japanese title 解錠 (Kaijō) means Opened Lock, rendered here as Unlock. It belongs to Volume 12 and ran in the 2014-15 issue on March 13, 2014.
