Soot is the element bound to this Logia-class fruit, that black residue left over when wood, coal, and similar matter burn without fully combusting. Its eater, the Revolutionary commander Karasu, gains three linked freedoms: to spawn the dust, to bend it to his intent, and to reduce his own body into it. From the Japanese susu, a word for soot, come the English labels such as the Soot-Soot Fruit.

On the page the ability arrived long before its formal name did. Crows built from Karasu's power were glimpsed among his fellow Revolutionaries, one even carrying a newspaper, well ahead of the moment the fruit was finally identified and several of its moves given titles. Curiously, the official series website once catalogued him under Paramecia users, despite his obvious knack for turning flesh into an element.

Once his shape becomes soot, Karasu shares the intangibility common to elemental users, letting gunfire and other physical strikes pass cleanly through, while the dust's featherlight nature keeps him suspended midair. Compress that loose powder into a denser half-solid mass and he can sculpt it into any figure he pleases, or fracture himself into scattered fragments, each retaining his conscious grip. No unique flaw has emerged; only the hazards facing every fruit eater and Logia types in particular, chiefly Armament Haki and Seastone, threaten him.

His favorite tactic breaks him apart into a flock of tightly packed crows, the move called Karasusu. Dispersed like this he flies swiftly, speaks and hears through any single bird, relays messages such as delivered newspapers, and hauls cargo or even a living passenger aloft, one crow proving strong enough to bear an average adult. The birds range far from his core mass and can even reassemble out of soot that comrades keep on them. In a fight he strips weapons from crowds faster than they react and harries them with pecking dives, and the powder also stiffens into other forms, such as tall ground-spikes.

Karasu, a senior figure in the Revolutionary Army, stands as the lone wielder. His crows debuted in animation with an emphasis on how closely they resembled real ones, and the whole bird-and-soot motif may echo an Italian folk tale of blackbirds turning dark after sheltering in a chimney. Among his named strikes, Karasu Renkon unleashes a focused pecking barrage that once forced Admiral Fujitora onto the defensive, while Obelisusu springs pointed columns of soot up between an enemy's feet as an ambush.
