Vinegar Doppio

Doppio looks slight but fit, so youthful that others find it hard to believe he could father a fifteen-year-old. Freckles add to his boyish air, and his pale irises fade away entirely whenever Diavolo takes the wheel. He gathers his hair into a short braided ponytail at the neck while leaving the front to sweep loosely across one side, its length drawn inconsistently from scene to scene. His outfit pairs a light sweater slashed with openings that bare his midriff, worn over a black mesh shirt, with baggy studded jeans.

Warm, truthful, and easily frightened, Doppio is by default a polite young man who gets along unusually well with children. His defining quirk is treating random objects, an ice cream cone, a spent cigarette, even a frog, as telephones through which he chats with his boss, never suspecting they inhabit the same body. Any attack sends him lurching into raw panic and submission, and he considers himself chronically unlucky, an ironic mirror to Diavolo's charmed fortune.

Yet his devotion runs deep enough that he insists on finishing missions himself, refusing to step aside for his boss even against a killer like Risotto Nero, and he quickly steadies into a cool, analytical fighter once the initial screaming passes. He is prone to sudden foul-mouthed rages and has little patience for anyone he deems an idiot, but toward Diavolo he stays unquestioningly obedient. His dying thoughts are of waiting for one more call from the boss he never stops trusting.

Doppio is first heard in the anime tipping off Squalo about the traitors within Passione, then seen in Sardinia clutching a briefcase and dodging a truck to rescue a small boy. The near-miss draws a fortune teller who unnervingly reads that Doppio has a daughter and presses to examine his palms; cornered and rattled, Doppio slams the man against a wall, and Diavolo surfaces to finish the killing. After a taxi ride to Donatella's house, Diavolo warns him that they are being watched, and he turns to find the assassin Risotto Nero.

Ordered to lure Risotto close enough for King Crimson to strike, Doppio is instead outmaneuvered, cracking his face on a rock and bleeding heavily; he manages to hide an incriminating photo by sticking it to his sole with blood. Risotto pegs him as a Stand user when he flinches at Aerosmith's patrol, and blades and needles begin erupting from Doppio's own mouth. Diavolo lends him Epitaph and King Crimson's arms, and Doppio pieces together that Risotto's Metallica manipulates the iron in blood. The duel turns when knives Doppio hurls toward Bucciarati's group prompt Narancia's Aerosmith to open fire on the nearest target, which happens to be Risotto; Diavolo emerges to seal the assassin's death.

Later Doppio serves as a disguise letting Diavolo approach and murder Abbacchio. In Rome he is seized as a hostage by Secco, saved by Bucciarati, and, exploiting Bucciarati's lost sight and hearing, passes himself off as Trish to reach Polnareff. When Chariot Requiem scrambles the souls of everyone in the city, Doppio's spirit lands in Bucciarati's body, which Team Bucciarati is guarding; the instant he stirs, Mista guns him down. He bleeds out on the pavement still hoping the boss will phone him one last time, though Diavolo has already abandoned the failing body to save himself, and to the end Doppio regards the sacrifice as his boss's clever, correct choice.
