Takagi is single-minded about landing Yuji for his squad, going as far as to rewrite the boy's club application to claim him. For all his pushiness, he plays fair enough to give Yuji an out, offering to drop the matter entirely if the student could defeat him in a contest.

The moment a student council representative clarifies to the occult club that Yuji has no place among them, Takagi steps in to announce he has switched Yuji's paperwork over to the athletics club, certain he needs the boy's talent for the nationals. He lays down his terms: beat him in a match and he will back off. They settle on shot put, and Takagi hurls the iron ball fourteen meters. Recognizing that Yuji has no technique, he lets the student throw however he likes, privately conceding that challenging a novice at shot put is unfair but justifying it by how badly he wants the recruit.
