Summary

A flashback shows Nobara refusing to evacuate with the paramedics, kept ignorant of Shoko's location so she would not do anything rash, and heading off alone rather than flee while others fight. In the present, Mahito skewers three civilians and uses them against Yuji on the stairs. When Yuji checks an injured person, they transfigure and explode, blinding him with blood and leaving him open to a finishing blow. Meanwhile, in Dogenzaka Alley, Nobara battles Mahito's double, unaware it cannot transfigure souls. Her attacks seem useless and she is wounded, but she persists anyway.

Nobara sets a trap: she drops a cursed-energy nail at the double's feet, detonates a cluster with Hairpin to stand the nails upright, then propels them through his lower body to pin him. Mounting the immobilized double, she drives a nail into his head and activates Resonance. Using the clone as an effigy, she damages the original Mahito's soul, nails bursting from his chest mid-strike against Yuji and saving him at the last second. The double, spitting blood from the rebounded damage, admits Yuji is not his only natural enemy.

Key Events

Nobara deduces from the weaker cursed energy and the missed touch that her opponent is merely a double unable to use Idle Transfiguration properly. With Resonance still suppressing the original, Yuji pummels Mahito with relentless punches, thanking Nobara for proving he is not alone. Rather than continue, the double flees into a subway entrance, and Nobara gives chase toward B5F. Yuji's main fight resumes when Mahito splits into spherical doubles, baits him into crushing a feint, and reforms to run. Both Mahitos end up in the same corridor with the two students closing from opposite ends.

Yuji realizes the danger too late and screams for Nobara to flee, but the original Mahito touches her face. As Idle Transfiguration takes hold, Nobara recalls her childhood in 2009: her outsider friendship with Fumi over a swapped backpack, her bond with the refined Saori who was driven from the village by vandalism, and her tearful promise to reunite with both before leaving for Tokyo in 2018. A grown Saori, unhappy with her own life, wonders if the two would be disappointed in her. Nobara, picturing her friends and her schoolmates, tells Yuji to pass along her final words, that she had a pretty good life, before the left side of her face bursts and she collapses, her blood splattering across his face.

Notes

The episode adapts chapters covering the conclusion of the Mahito fight and Nobara's backstory. Much of the closing flashback explores Nobara's view that her tiny village made it harder to be a stranger than a friend, shaping her drive to escape to the city. Anime changes extend the double's fight with Nobara, expand Fumi's pre-friendship story, and show Nobara imagining both her younger self and a younger Fumi in her final moments rather than only the older Fumi.
