At the climax of their duel, Megumi springs one more trap on Reggie. Both men buckle under brutal pressure as they test who can carry the heavier load.

Key Events

The narration sets out the math: a person blacks out around five or six g, and Megumi, at sixty kilograms while hauling 2.4 tons, sits at roughly forty units of that force. His domain reproduces Max Elephant's mass faithfully, and the descending shikigami breaks Reggie's fibula and heel. Cursing that he never kept the earlier trucks for added load, Reggie weighs diving into the shadow to deploy his ace but dreads being trapped there once the domain lifts, so he chooses to grit it out. Holding the elephant with one arm, he nearly triggers Contractual Re-Creation, only to give way under the mass and sink into the dark, where the lack of buoyancy and air starts to black him out. As Megumi pauses to be sure of the kill, one re-created car ferries Reggie back up, because he had held off the dismissal command to keep that weight pressing on Megumi.

Back on the surface, Reggie conjures a two-story house of at least thirty tons, and then the picture inverts: submerged in water, with Megumi's arms clamped around his throat from the rear, he is choked into deactivating his technique and unregistering the cars' weight. Surfacing, Reggie sees he is in a basement pool, the heavy house having smashed the floor and dropped him through once Megumi vanished into his own shadow and dropped the domain. Megumi informs him his receipts are far too soaked to burn with cursed energy now, which kills the activation condition for Contractual Re-Creation.

Notes

Reggie points out that Megumi can no longer call shikigami, and Megumi seems to settle for a purely physical bout. Reggie is unconvinced, suspecting the pause was meant to recharge the technique and certain none of the shikigami can end him while he assumes Divine Dog: Totality stays out of reach. He pulls ahead in close combat, baiting Megumi toward summoning any beast except the dog. A breath before Reggie's blow lands, Divine Dog: Totality shears off a chunk of his face along with the ear and most of one shoulder at blinding speed, its nose pierced by the earlier knives and his flesh caught in its jaws. Megumi had simply waited for Reggie to dismiss the dog completely, proving the rival's own claim that every sorcerer amounts to little more than a swindler as he crumples into a spreading pool of blood. The chapter belongs to the Culling Game Arc and corresponds to anime Episode 58.
