Personality

Generally earnest, Nami tends to serve as the straight man, the tsukkomi, among her companions. She is a deep romantic who dreams of a high school full of love, having been smitten with Yamamoto Luffy the instant she saw him and frequently picturing a future at his side. Like Luffy she has faced teasing over her name, though far less, and she minds it little since Nami is an ordinary given name. She does, however, feel insecure about her bust, her short height, and what she sees as her own lack of cuteness.

History

Nami and Yamamoto Luffy struck up a quick friendship after discovering they both carried the names of One Piece characters, and somewhere along the way she fell for him. When the story opens, the pair are leaving school one day when Nakatsugawa Usopp introduces himself as another student carrying a One Piece name too. Much to Nami's irritation, the three end up spending the afternoon together, ruining her one chance to be alone with him.

The following day, classmates were picking on Luffy, and although Nami stepped in to defend him, the tormentors told her a girl had no place getting involved. The trio then learned that Usopp had founded a Pirate Club and named Luffy its captain; despite their initial surprise, it was Usopp who rescued Luffy from the bullies. As a member of the club, Nami draws nearer to both boys, gets swept up in Usopp's schemes, and keeps trying to turn her bond with Luffy into romance.
