Chapter 162

While the Pro Heroes were busy with the Shie Hassaikai, Sorahiko Torino and Naomasa Tsukauchi followed eyewitness accounts into a mountain range and pinned down Kurogiri. Gran Torino tells him that his arrest spells the end of the League of Villains. Naomasa warns about Warp Gate, and Kurogiri responds with a question of his own, asking whether they have heard the rumors of a ruffian haunting these slopes, since speaking to that ruffian is precisely why he came. Gran Torino would rather hear the story from behind bars.

A tremendous crash rolls through the area. Kurogiri recalls All For One's instruction that should anything befall him, protecting Tomura Shigaraki falls to Kurogiri, and that if the burden ever grew too heavy, he could call on the ruffian. He tells the two men that Tomura was never the only thing All For One was cultivating. A creature tall enough to clear the treetops steps into view with a boombox slung at its neck, and Kurogiri names him: Gigantomachia, one of All For One's most devoted servants.

The next day, at the hospital where the heroes are recovering, the news covers the convoy attack. The League's raid on the vehicle carrying Overhaul is reported as a total failure that lost crucial evidence, and the police force absorbs heavy public criticism. Izuku is stunned that Tomura went after Kai at all, though Shota Aizawa refuses to let him shoulder the blame. The classmates are to head back to U.A., all except Mirio Togata, who is taking leave.

Izuku asks to stay until Eri wakes. Shota reminds him that his presence changes nothing and that her care belongs to the doctors. Izuku settles for visiting Mirio's room instead, and finds him exercising on the bed in unexpectedly good spirits. Mirio knows he has lost Permeation and Sir Nighteye both, and admits he has no right to cheerfulness, but he refuses sadness on principle: Nighteye smiled through every conversation with him, honoring that teaching means smiling too, a future outstanding hero should carry himself that way, and a gloomy face would only hurt Eri.

Guilt-ridden, Izuku floats a hypothetical, asking whether Mirio would take One For All if it were offered. Mirio says he would decline, because accepting it would hand Izuku nothing but suffering. He does not follow why Izuku looks so crushed, and simply thanks him for the work he did. Mirio's confidence rests on Eri: once she masters Rewind, she can return him to the state where his Quirk still existed. He asks Izuku to smile, and the optimism lands, letting Izuku accept things as they are. Izuku promises to be waiting at U.A. when the leave ends.

The following day outside Class 1-A's dormitory at Heights Alliance, Shoto Todoroki and Katsuki Bakugo head out for another run at the Provisional Hero License Exam, with Katsuki already furious that Shoto is walking ahead of him.

Gran Torino's unit takes Kurogiri into custody and is forced into a hasty retreat when Gigantomachia, loyal to All For One, arrives. The giant makes his first appearance here.

Izuku learns of the League's strike on Overhaul. Eri remains hospitalized to recover, and Mirio departs on leave over his lost Quirk. Izuku proposes handing him One For All, but Mirio refuses, choosing to wait for Eri's Rewind to restore what he lost.

Shoto and Katsuki set off for their next round of remedial coursework.
