Chapter 46: Bizarre! Gran Torino Appears

With hero names settled, Shota Aizawa outlines a week of field training. Nominated students receive tailored lists of agencies, and the rest get lists of forty options. Everyone must lock in a single choice by week's end.

All Might catches Izuku Midoriya leaving class that afternoon and walks him down the corridor with news of a nomination. It came from Gran Torino, retired these days, who spent one year on the U.A. faculty as All Might's own homeroom teacher and counted All Might's predecessor among his close friends. Since Gran Torino knows about One For All, All Might reads the nomination as deliberate. Izuku notices how tense his mentor gets discussing the man and wonders what he is walking into. Training Izuku is All Might's responsibility, he says, but this is an opportunity worth taking, and he adds that the repaired hero costume is ready. Izuku signs up.

Back among the faculty, Shota did not expect anyone to have decided already, and frowns at Tenya Ida's pick of the Hosu City Hero Office, since better offers sat on his list. When the day comes, Shota sees the class off at the station, reminding them to keep their costumes packed rather than worn, not to lose them, and to mind their manners. Izuku tells Tenya that he and Ochaco Uraraka are there if he needs to talk, and Tenya agrees, though he walks away scowling.

Izuku reaches Gran Torino's address and finds a dilapidated building. He steps inside mid-introduction and recoils at the sight of the old hero sprawled on the floor in a red puddle. Gran Torino sits up and explains the ketchup-drowned sausages he dropped. He asks the boy's name, hears it along with the U.A. connection, and cannot recall making any nomination, then remembers and calls him Toshinori. Izuku heads out to phone All Might, but Gran Torino wants a fight, One For All included, costume on, so he can gauge what the boy can do, and promptly forgets him again. Convinced he is being toyed with, Izuku snaps that he needs control of his power fast, given how little time All Might has left, and starts to leave, visibly disappointed. Gran Torino blurs across the room and cuts him off, act dropped, telling him that a goal like that is precisely why he should stay, and asking him again to fight.

Field training assignments go out. Shoto is drafted by his father's agency and Tenya chooses an office in Hosu City.

All Might names Gran Torino as the hero who nominated Izuku, identifying him as his former homeroom teacher and a friend of the previous One For All holder.

Izuku meets Gran Torino, whose senility turns out to be an act.

Kohei Horikoshi's forty-sixth chapter, 19 pages, published June 15, 2015 in issue 29 of 2015. It sits in the Vs. Hero Killer arc, collects into Volume 6, and splits across Episode 26 and Episode 27. Izuku, Ochaco, Eijiro Kirishima, and Tsuyu Asui share the cover. Gran Torino debuts, and Gunhead appears in picture form.

A "Kal-el Hero Office" sits at the bottom of the agency list Shoto is holding, a nod to Superman. Horikoshi's comment for the week is about playing Splatoon with his staff and having trouble stopping.
