Chapter 62 (Vigilantes)

The new semester brings the students back to U.A. from their Hero Work-Studies. Hizashi notices that Shota now wears goggles matching Oboro's, and Oboro jokes that they are branding themselves as a duo. Shota deflates it: the goggles were a gift to protect his eyes, purely for his Quirk's sake. Sensoji of Class 2-B interrupts to accuse Shota of stealing his concept, since his own Blast Quirk blinds him and he took to shades once he grasped how vital eye protection is. The idea that his thinking overlaps with Sensoji's mortifies Shota, and Hizashi clarifies that Sensoji simply copied his sunglasses look after they ended up at the same agency. Sensoji stays sore about it; Shota would rather ignore him.

Class 2-A's homeroom teacher then announces a two-on-two battle exercise run across both classes, and starts assembling teams. Oboro asks to partner with Shota, since they share a work study, and the teacher likes the idea enough to tell anyone in the same position to do likewise. Hizashi objects to being stuck with Sensoji and is overruled. In the exercise his grumbling proves misplaced, because Voice and Blast together shut down most opponents outright and the pair win comfortably, while Shota and Oboro rely on subtler technique to reach the same result.

The two teams meet. Sensoji challenges Shota directly and stakes the goggles on it, since they bother him. Shota is indifferent to the fixation, but Oboro accepts on his behalf, wagering their goggles against Sensoji's and Hizashi's shades, to Hizashi's bewilderment at being included. Sensoji orders Hizashi to stand aside and takes them on alone. His blast misses, Oboro closes in and blinds him with a cloud, and when it clears the battlefield is full of clouds hiding his opponents. As Sensoji winds up to blow them all away, he finds his Quirk gone: Shota has circled behind him under cover of the distraction and hit him with Erasure, and Oboro's quarterstaff comes down on his head, dropping him and knocking his shades loose.

Sensoji wants to keep going. Shota calls the wager off instead, on the grounds that two-on-one is no fair contest, and offers the shades back. Unable to stomach the humiliation, Sensoji throws them down and stamps them to pieces, insisting he never needed them and never lost, then walks off. The teacher scolds him for refusing to work with Hizashi, pauses to praise Shota and Oboro's teamwork, and hurries after him to continue the lecture.

On the roof later, Hizashi wears goggles too, having lost the bet, and takes it in stride, joking with Oboro that the three of them could market themselves as a set. Shota wonders aloud whether Hizashi means to join the Purple Agency; Oboro is thinking further ahead, proposing that once all three go independent they open their own agency. His reasoning is that they mesh: he and Hizashi can drive the action, which does not suit Shota, and Erasure lacks finishing power but excels at neutralizing an enemy for one of them to put away. Shota asks whether that is just a polite way of saying he is useless alone, and Oboro corrects him, saying he is built for teamwork. Shota protests that he never agreed to any of it, which earns teasing about his brooding act. Nemuri joins in, and Oboro, reddening, says the discussion was about four of them opening an agency, a number that startles the others. She declines, having her own plans and young people already waiting on her, and when Oboro offers to be one of them Hizashi asks what became of the plan. Shota lets the conversation drift and watches the sky, feeling things shift.

A week later, in the rain, an emergency call goes out over a brutal villain rampage in Tamosiya Ward. His Purple Highness is already there together with a trainee, both of them wounded, and the call is a desperate plea for backup. Purple lies unconscious atop rubble, and near him on the ground sit goggles like Shota's and Oboro's, smashed beyond use. The 21-page chapter released September 28, 2019 and was collected in Volume 8, adapted as Episode 20 of the Vigilantes anime. It went up on Viz two days early and was pulled shortly after. Serialization called it Beyond the Glass, or Garasu-goshi, before the volume retitle, and Tasomiya Ward, where the battle with Garvey unfolds, is a nod to Dathomir from Star Wars.
