Chapter 64 (Vigilantes)

Rain hammers down as Shota Aizawa charges the towering villain. Garvey peels a stored lump off his back; Erasure kills the Quirk before it can fire and Shota boots the inert mass clear. The improvisation nearly costs lives, because the charge releases the moment his Erasure lapses, wrecking ground near the schoolchildren. Reflex is not enough here.

Two rules take shape: stay above Garvey so the swings go skyward, and punt every deactivated lump high enough to burst harmlessly. That answers the Quirk, not the bulk. A swat flattens him and despair sets in, until his partner's voice reaches him through the gourd-speaker, promising he can win. Shota rises, cracks Garvey's left eye, gets flung back by a swipe, then lassos a slab of rubble with his capture weapon and drives it into the villain's face.

Enraged, Garvey turns loose every lump at once. That is the opening. Erasure holds the charges dormant, the capture weapon rakes them together, and Shota feeds the bundle down Garvey's throat before blinking. The blasts gut the villain from inside and leave him unconscious. Spent, Shota drops too, shouting to Oboro that they won.

Crews arrive afterward. The children go back to their families, Garvey is taken into custody, and the wounded heroes are treated, though His Purple Highness needs hospitalization. Told that a mere trainee beat Garvey alone, Shota calls it teamwork, since his partner never stopped cheering. He asks Nemuri about Oboro's injuries and reads her silence as bad news.

Hizashi reaches for the speaker; Shota tells him to return it to its owner. Hizashi goes quiet, hand shaking, and Nemuri sobs. Sensoji lifts the device and reports it completely dead. Shota insists he heard encouragement throughout the fight, and Sensoji answers that a boy facing death talked himself through it while stress supplied a familiar voice. Refusing that, Shota looks toward the rubble and sees a bloodstained body bag. Oboro Shirakumo is dead. Sensoji keeps praising the solo win until Hizashi says he envies a mind that simple. The rain thickens; Nemuri warns the two out of it, and Hizashi replies that the weather suits their mood. Memories run through Shota as the friends mourn.

Shota Aizawa defeats Garvey alone, devising a method that neutralizes the stored charges without endangering the schoolchildren, then turning that stockpile against the villain from the inside.

Garvey is arrested and the children are returned to their families. His Purple Highness requires hospital treatment.

The voice Shota heard proves impossible, since the speaker was broken. Oboro Shirakumo is confirmed dead, a loss Shota and Hizashi Yamada face together in the rain.

Serialization used the shorter title Shota, rendered ショータ, before the volume edition changed it.
