Hiruga

Character

Hiruga is a Land of Haze shinobi, one of a band of orphan brothers raised together in that poor country. Schooled in forbidden Haze techniques, he joins his siblings to recover Hashirama Senju's stolen cells, placing both the mission and his brothers well ahead of his own life.

Personality

As with his siblings, Hiruga is fiercely devoted, willing to lay down his life for his brothers and for the job they carry out. Yet that same devotion splits him, since loyalty to the mission and loyalty to family rarely point the same way. The root of it is a rough, needy childhood: because he knows firsthand what it means to suffer, he holds tight to any scrap of joy he can grab and looks with plain resentment on people whose lives have been comfortable, judging them coddled.

Abilities

Hiruga's mastery, like that of his brothers, rests in the forbidden Haze arts. His own signature is a self-immolating binding jutsu: it pours out a tarry fluid that locks down everyone within reach and hauls whatever stands close into a black void, while the same ooze throws up tendrils to keep foes from striking at him. He handles Water Release capably enough to make water clones, and the tantō he carries suggests he can fight with a sword as well.

History

The Kara Actuation Arc sends Hiruga and his siblings to reclaim the First Hokage's cells, Hashirama Senju's genetic material, which has turned up on the Land of Silence's black market. Dressed as women, they try to seduce Kirisaki into revealing where the cell is, but the act falls flat when Boruto Uzumaki appears wearing a woman's shape himself. Tailing Boruto's team, the brothers learn that Sakuya is the one holding the cell. Yoruga sacrifices himself to open the castle's barrier, requesting that his earring be placed beneath the peach tree at home, and Hiruga, disguised as a serving woman, warns the butler of intruders so the blame for the killings lands on Boruto. He flings a bottle of strong perfume at Boruto to mark his scent for pursuers before the brothers escape and mourn Yoruga.

On the journey home the group notices it is being shadowed, so Yūga hangs back to delay the hunters and pays with his life. Hiruga passes his own earring to Asaka for that same peach tree, then squares off against the Konoha ninja and traps them in his binding jutsu. Astonished that Hiruga would spend his life just to gain Asaka a sliver of time, Boruto is told he grasps nothing of true hardship in so unforgiving a country, and that Hiruga will do whatever it takes for his homeland to flourish. Boruto's readiness to free him gives Hiruga pause, and once Omoi brings word that Deepa, another seeker of the Hashirama Cell, is heading for the Land of Haze, Hiruga releases the technique to reach his brother. Reunited with Asaka and having agreed to a ceasefire, he is cut down by Deepa.
