Kakashi Chronicles ~ Boys' Life on the Battlefield ~ Part 1

Obito Uchiha arrives late to a clearing and is scolded by Kakashi, who cites the shinobi code demanding punctuality. Their squad leader, Minato Namikaze, announces a fresh mission and, because Kakashi has just made jōnin, places him in command of Obito and Rin Nohara while he handles a separate task. To mark the promotion, Minato presents Kakashi a Flying Thunder God Kunai and Rin offers a custom medical kit, while Obito, having brought nothing, bristles when Kakashi dismisses any gift as pointless. Minato explains that with the Third Shinobi World War underway and Iwagakure pushing into Kusagakure, the squad must demolish the Kannabi Bridge to hobble the enemy, while he draws attention on the front lines.

En route, Kakashi spots the Iwa scout Mahiru surrounded by shadow clones and unveils a new technique, the Chidori, plowing through the copies toward the real target. The technique's tunnel vision nearly costs him his life when Mahiru draws a sword, but Minato intervenes, marking Mahiru's foot and later teleporting in to finish him. Camped that night, Minato reveals why Kakashi is so rigid: his father Sakumo, the celebrated White Fang, once broke the rules to save his comrades, was condemned for it even by those he rescued, and took his own life. Since then Kakashi has refused to speak of him and clung to the shinobi code.

This is episode 119 of Naruto Shippūden, part of the Kakashi Gaiden arc, adapting chapters 239, 240, and 241, and it aired alongside Part 2 as episode 120. The next morning Obito pledges loyalty to Kakashi as his captain. On the way to the bridge, two Iwa ninja ambush them, and one uses a camouflage technique to abduct Rin. When Kakashi insists the mission comes before their comrade, Obito refuses to obey, branding those who abandon friends worse than scum, and the two part ways. The episode uses the opening theme Light of a Firefly and the ending theme My Answer.
