Suspicion falls on the domain's chief strategist as the shinobi trace the Cursed Warrior back to its handler, guarding the young feudal lord while a plot for succession unravels.
Gathered at Mōsō's home, the group works through their theory that Kōmei, the village's tactician and a contender against the heir for leadership, is the mind steering the Cursed Warrior. To test the idea, they seek out the newly installed lord Sagi at a lakeside where he keeps his buried recollections of his sister Toki. When assassins move against Sagi, the shinobi shield him, then trail the Cursed Warrior to a rendezvous with Kōmei. After the attacker is beaten, it becomes clear that this Cursed Warrior and the earlier one were not the same person. Evidence gathered at the scene points to Kōmei orchestrating the second Cursed Warrior, and he is taken into custody.
Kōmei is exposed as the likely engineer behind the reappearing Cursed Warrior. The reveal that two separate individuals filled the Cursed Warrior role is a major turn in the mystery. Sagi survives the assassination attempt thanks to the ninja escort, and Kōmei's arrest caps the investigation.
