Summary

Shaken and refusing to accept it, Obito crosses toward Rin's body as the warnings of Madara and White Zetsu ring in his mind. He passes clean through Kakashi with his phasing power and halts only at the corpse. His hand slips through her at first as he tries to feel a pulse, until the truth settles in and he gathers her lifeless form close, swearing to build a world where she still lives and to overturn the fate that took her. Back at Madara's side, and told by White Zetsu that no witnesses remain, Obito is drawn in close. Madara has him gaze into his left eye and pulls him into a genjutsu, appearing younger there while recounting the tale of the Sage of the Six Paths and the Ten-Tails.

Later, Obito and Zetsu journey to Amegakure to find Nagato, a youth of mixed Senju and Uzumaki blood into whom Madara had planted his Rinnegan before sealing himself away. Obito recalls being told that Madara gained the dōjutsu by grafting Senju cells into himself, though it awakened only as his life neared its end. That power, Madara explained, let him call up the hollow husk of the Ten-Tails and use it to grow a living clone of Hashirama. Madara went on to teach Obito how to command the statue, several Uchiha forbidden techniques, and Yin-Yang Release. At one point he seeded his will into half of White Zetsu to make Black Zetsu, and also into the Hashirama clone, sprouting a black receiver from its navel that Obito was to use with the Six Paths Technique before cutting the statue's link. As the elder's life gave out, he charged Obito to carry on until his revival. The chapter closes with Obito and Zetsu reaching Nagato, Obito presenting himself as Madara Uchiha.
