The Time of Vows

Ino pulls Chōji clear of Asuma's incoming technique. Asuma keeps trying to provoke his old student into swinging back, but Chōji will not bite. Ino takes up the fight in his place, and together with Chōza and Shikamaru she reminds him of the promise he once made. Recalling Asuma's dying wish, Shikamaru presses Chōji to find his backbone. In a separate clash, Kakuzu flees from Izumo and Kotetsu, while Tenten gets hold of the Bashōsen and turns it against Kakuzu's lightning mask, tearing it apart. The First Division calls on Chōza to help take down Dan. To his father's astonishment, Chōji unfurls his butterfly wings without swallowing the Three Coloured Pills, and Asuma looks on satisfied that his student is finally prepared to stand and fight.

Ino shields Chōji and battles Asuma in his stead as their teammates invoke his oath. Kakuzu retreats from Izumo and Kotetsu, and Tenten destroys his lightning mask with the Bashōsen. Chōza is summoned to fight Dan, and Chōji resolves himself, releasing Butterfly Chōji Mode without the Three Coloured Pills to his father's amazement and Asuma's approval.

This is chapter 533 in the fifty-sixth volume, set during the Fourth Shinobi World War: Confrontation arc. Its Viz release bears the title A Time of Oaths. The chapter centers on Chōji overcoming his hesitation against the reanimated Asuma.
