Iba Iba no Mi

Among the Paramecia class sits the power Sommers holds, which brands him a Thorn Human. Its hallmark is the growth and command of barbs and briar-laden runners, sprouted either from his own frame or from any surface within reach. Length, girth, and to a degree the outline of each vine bend to his intent. The iba in the name shortens ibara, meaning a thorn or a briar shrub, and rivals such as Jinbe have branded the barbs iron thorns for their toughness.

Every spine bites into flesh at even a glancing touch, which lets the vines double as spears, as blocking walls, and as a snarled field that pens foes in place lest they be sliced. Sommers can layer them over his own skin, over a blade, over the terrain, or over a captive, and anything so wrapped turns dangerous to grasp. He is able to swell his blade into a barbed club far larger than himself, delivering blows that crush and puncture at once, and he rides serpent-shaped brambles or snags a high ledge with a vine to break a fall. The signature flourish is stripping the runners of all visibility, so coils looped around a living person hover without contact, leaving that person a hidden hedgehog whose rescuer is shredded on contact. The reach is finite, however, so being forced far off or being knocked out lets the surrounding thorns crumble away. Fire withers them as it would a plant, capable fighters like Zoro and Luffy smash them apart, and Sommers himself can be gored by his own creation. The ordinary Devil Fruit frailty rounds out the drawbacks. His named moves span Ibarrier, a barrier of vines stout enough to halt a Haki-charged axe, Ibarush, a rush of skewering briars, Guren Jigoku, a floor of thorns, and Iba Launcher, which spits barbs from a bramble serpent's maw.

Sommers, who has held the fruit for at least thirty-eight years, is its lone bearer and a gloating sadist who savors turning affection into a weapon against his victims. In the Knights of God hostage plot on Elbaph he stacked his gift with his comrades', letting Killingham sedate giant children from afar, Gunko steer their sleepwalking down an arrow-marked route, and his own unseen coils maim anyone who tried to reach them. In open battle the gashes run deep, letting him fell a giant on par with Jaguar D. Saul and briefly stall an elderly Scopper Gaban, while his bramble binding of Nico Robin showed how tightly the fruit can trap a foe.
