Overview

The Ito Ito no Mi turns its consumer into a String Human, granting the ability to produce and steer white, wafer-thin threads. Its owner is the former Warlord Donquixote Doflamingo, who first showed the power off in the Jaya Arc but kept it unexplained until events at Dressrosa finally named and detailed it. The fruit itself is pear-shaped, pale lilac, and capped with a curly fuchsia stem, notable as the first known Devil Fruit without a green stem. Across foreign releases it carries the name String-String Fruit.

Mechanics

Doflamingo can extrude strings from nearly any part of his body, even his own organs, though the palms and fingertips are most common. The threads attach to almost any surface, including clouds, and serve a staggering range of purposes: hijacking a person's motion like a marionette by linking to their spine, slicing flesh and steel like monomolecular wire, ferrying him through the air, and bundling into ropes, bullets, clones, force fields, and webs. They are tough enough that even Issho's falling meteorites were carved into cubes against them rather than breaking through, and sharp enough to sever the leg of a giant or decapitate Crocodile. Coating them in Armament Haki boosts their cutting and bypasses Logia intangibility.

Like any Paramecia, the fruit can be awakened, and Doflamingo reached that rare stage, letting him convert the ground and buildings around him into more string for expanded attacks and defense. The drawbacks are specific: he cannot travel through open sky when there are no clouds to anchor to, the strings cannot cut Seastone, and they vanish entirely if he loses consciousness, which is how the cage over Dressrosa faded once Luffy beat him. Brute force can also break free of his control, as Luffy proved by snapping the threads with Gear 4.

Notable Users

Doflamingo is the only known wielder, having received the fruit and a gold-plated pistol from Trebol when he was a child who had just awakened Conqueror's Haki. His signature Parasite latches strings onto a victim's spine to seize control of their body below the neck, used to make allies and civilians slaughter one another while he watches; it once subdued King Riku and an entire army at once. His arsenal runs deep: Goshikito slashes with five colored strings, Overheat whips a condensed rope across kilometers, Tamaito fires string like bullets, Black Knight forms a fighting clone of himself, and Itonoko saws off limbs. His ultimate technique, Torikago, fountains string into a dome-shaped cage that slices anything passing through and slowly closes in on his position. Awakening unlocks further moves such as Off White, Billow White, Ever White, Flap Thread, and the piercing God Thread, which Luffy finally broke through with King Kong Gun. The fruit resembles Leo's Nui Nui no Mi in its thread theme but operates on a far larger scale.
