Appearance

Though youthful in face and well-balanced in build, Black Maria is enormous by human measure, rising to 8.2 meters and edging out even Kaidou in height. Her blonde hair is dressed in geisha style, complete with a pair of swords worked into the arrangement and one loose strand falling across a sky-blue left eye. A set of curved red horns crowns her head, vivid lipstick colors her mouth, and she rarely sets down a long smoking pipe.

Her usual outfit is a revealing black kimono in blue and yellow floral patterns that exposes her shoulders and chest, tied off with a turquoise obi, paired with black zori and white tabi. With the kimono removed, she wraps a sarashi around her chest. Across her back sits the kanji reading "woman trouble," and when she shifts into spider form each forelimb bears its own Jolly Roger, suggesting those designs are inked on her true body.

Personality

In the fortress halls she comes across as an easygoing, flirtatious courtesan. Given a task, she prefers to linger out of harm's way, keep her captain entertained, or play music with her followers while others charge into combat. A genuine soft spot for children also surfaces in her, seen when she dressed Momonosuke's wounds and let the boy rest after Kanjuro's beating.

The moment she does her actual work as a pirate, that gentleness disappears. She rivals or exceeds the cruelest of the Beasts crew, torturing without limit and breaking promises to prisoners who give in. She likes to hold rebellious men captive as "pets," battering them until devotion is all they can voice, then guarding them jealously and punishing any disloyalty. Vain about her courtesan image, she even reworked her own Devil Fruit shape to look prettier, and she spoke plainly of mutilating, using, and ultimately disposing of Nico Robin once Robin's worth as a Poneglyph reader was spent.

Abilities

Inside the Beasts Pirates, a Tobiroppo answers to no one but the All-Stars and Kaidou himself, and her 480 million berry bounty, the second largest in the group, marks her as someone who could plausibly challenge for an All-Star post. She manages the Pleasure Hall on Onigashima and is a gifted shamisen player and singer. As a schemer she is sharp, threading webs and stationing tranquilizer-equipped underlings along corridors and turning Sanji's chivalry against him by having Sarahebi fake being harassed. She commands both Armament and Observation Haki, yet relies chiefly on her fruit and her arsenal.

Her abilities stem from an Ancient Zoan called the Kumo Kumo no Mi (Rosamygale Grauvogeli model), which turns her into a prehistoric meat-eating spider or a human-spider hybrid. Her standard hybrid form has two legs and six arms, but she can adopt a centaur-shaped build, possibly drug-assisted, for a more alluring look. The spider gifts let her crawl across walls and ceilings, jab with poison barbs on her legs, and fire intensely sticky, flammable thread that snares foes or forms shields and elaborate traps. In battle she also brings a polearm tipped with Wanyudo, a blazing wheel demon secretly run by a Pug SMILE user moving inside it, dons brass knuckles she calls the Oiran Knuckle to hammer pinned targets, and casts an "illusion mist" that throws her victims into hallucination.

She entered the Wano fighting when the Tobiroppo assembled on Onigashima for the Fire Festival and Kaidou ordered them to track down his son Yamato. Skipping the hunt, she remained beside Kaidou and Orochi, treating the battered Momonosuke before Orochi took him to be crucified. Once the raid broke out, King instructed the group to keep the alliance off the roof, but she withdrew to a tatami room to wait, filling the time with her shamisen. After her underlings baited and bound Sanji, she toyed with him, confessing a taste for rough-edged men and deciding to keep him; when he would not call out, she pounded him with her knuckles until he shouted for Robin. Robin then slipped past the web traps, flung Black Maria aside, and freed Sanji with Brook's aid.

The ensuing duel saw her try the illusion mist, disguising her Gifters as Robin's dead loved ones, though neither Robin nor the long-haunted Brook fell for it. She swung Wanyudo and set the floor ablaze, only for Robin to carry them both to safety while Brook froze the demon solid. Switching to her polearm as a club and her knuckles against a huge effigy of Robin, she nearly broke her foe down, since harming the effigy wounded Robin too. Robin countered with a Fish-Man Karate blow that put out the flames, then morphed into a colossal demon, grabbed Black Maria, and broke her spine, finishing the fight. Her fate afterward is unknown.
