Chadros Higelyges, known to nearly everyone as Brownbeard, captained a New World crew that seized Foodvalten once Whitebeard died. Crushed by Basil Hawkins and rebuilt into an alligator centaur by Caesar Clown, he guards Punk Hazard until betrayal turns him toward the Straw Hats.
Towering and heavyset, Brownbeard runs roughly triple a normal man's height and quadruple his bulk. A long brown beard kept in three braids and a matching mustache frame his face, and the hair spilling from his tricorne is plaited down his back. His coat hangs over an open shirt that barely covers his shoulders, baring a chest fitted with a wide wrestling-style belt that displays his jolly roger. After Hawkins robbed him of the use of his legs, Caesar and Trafalgar Law grafted a four-legged alligator lower body and tail onto him, remaking him as a centaur, and he added a fur-trimmed maroon jacket suited to Punk Hazard's freeze.
In his first appearance Brownbeard reeks of arrogance, styling himself with the lordly honorific sama and flaunting a bounty that actually sat below the New World's hundred-million average. Being unrecognized stung him badly. When the Straw Hats and Hawkins both treated his name as a joke, his confidence cracked, and he was delighted when the G-5 Marines knew who he was. He is an opportunist at heart, pouncing on Whitebeard's old territory the moment the great man fell, yet he is clear-eyed enough to recognize when an opponent outmatches him, panicking once he learned Luffy's bounty. Two years and a humbling defeat changed him. He came to treasure loyalty and friendship, defending his crewmates and the other prisoners fiercely, and his rage at Caesar deepened the moment he learned the scientist had abandoned his men to die and had set off the gas catastrophe four years earlier. Like many in the series, he owns a signature laugh: Uohhohho.
Brownbeard surfaced terrorizing Foodvalten, an island Whitebeard had once shielded, ordering the late emperor's flag slashed and proclaiming the place his. His swagger met its match in Basil Hawkins, who casually mocked his name and warned that he saw death's shadow over him. The clash went unseen, but it cost Brownbeard the use of his legs and his crew their freedom. Washing up on Punk Hazard, the paralyzed men were taken in by Caesar Clown, and Law fitted Brownbeard with alligator limbs that let him walk again, earning his gratitude and his service as leader of the Centaur Patrol Unit.
He resurfaced as that unit's boss when Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Robin crossed the island, mistaking Zoro for the samurai cutting down his comrades. His forces capsized the boat and moved in, only for Brook to buy the group time, and once Brownbeard recognized Luffy he froze in terror. Defeated, he was pressed into hauling the Straw Hats around, growing to resent them even as he begged Law for rescue and was ignored. Chained up, he spilled his history and insisted Caesar was a good man, until reality unraveled. The Yeti Cool Brothers attacked, and Scotch revealed Caesar had ordered Brownbeard's death for getting captured, playing a recording to prove it before shooting him with an explosive round.
He survived, woke during Nami and Usopp's standoff with Caesar, and threw himself at the scientist in fury only to be blown apart again. Still he endured, hauling allies clear of the poison cloud, ferrying the Straw Hats and G-5 Marines through the collapsing facility, and weathering Caesar's muscle relaxant to keep fighting. When Caesar at last admitted leaving the crew to die and engineering the old gas disaster, Brownbeard's own duped subordinates gunned him down, and Luffy's giant fist saved him by launching Caesar away. Once everyone reached safety, Brownbeard chose to surrender, reasoning that Marine custody could cure Caesar's poison and that he had no crew left to return to. He joined the closing celebration and thanked Smoker for the chance to recover his petrified men.

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
After the Punk Hazard incident, Brownbeard surrendered to the Marines, reasoning that G-5 custody could cure Caesar Clown's poison and that he had no crew left to return to, then joined in the closing celebration.

Brownbeard turned on Caesar Clown after learning the scientist had ordered his death for getting captured and had abandoned his men to die, on top of causing the original gas disaster on Punk Hazard.
Brownbeard relies on his massive alligator centaur body and immense size and strength to overpower foes, though his crew was ultimately defeated when Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Robin crossed Punk Hazard.
