Appearance

Gyro's silhouette is unmistakable thanks to the oversized clover sprouting from his head and the spiked orange crab claw bolted where his left hand once was, the metal attachment that earned his nickname. Lean and of middling height, he has a rounded, youthful face marked by two red dots on the cheeks, a squared nose, a gap where a tooth went missing, and dark hair framing a beard. He favors a bicorne stamped with his flag and slung under his chin by a string, worn over a light blue captain's coat with one sleeve cut short, an unbuttoned vest, striped calf-length trousers, and sandals, with a katana at his side. His true human arm was later seen bitten off and drifting beside him after his defeat.

Personality

Calculation guides most of his choices. Knowing his crew stood no chance battling Fish-Men in the water, he judged surrender and later flight to be the smarter play rather than dying for the chance to reach the Mermaid Cafe. That same pragmatism deserted him against Hody Jones, however, since past victories over Fish-Men had bred an overconfidence that the Fish-Man captain seized to humiliate him.

History

After leaving South Blue, Gyro guided his crew across Paradise and reached Fish-Man Island, slipping past the sleeping Kraken only to be cornered by the New Fish-Man Pirates, who handed him the same grim choice given to the Straw Hats: serve or sink. As captain he holds command over his men, and his survival of Paradise's many perils points to genuine experience, backed by a sword with a clover-shaped guard and the crab claw he readied as a weapon. When a chance to break away appeared, he took it and told a grumbling subordinate to abandon any thought of returning. Hody Jones intercepted them before they got far, ripping the ship and crew apart with his jaws alone. Gyro tried to stand against him and lost outright when Hody tore off the crab claw. His battered crew was spared and floated up to the surface in a bubble, a deliberate warning Hody meant to spread about the menace of Fish-Men.
